POINT OF INTEREST
Cíes Lighthouse
The Monte Cíes Lighthouse, also known as Faro do Monte do Faro, is the most important lighthouse in the Cíes Islands archipelago. Rising 178 meters above sea level, it offers breathtaking views of the entire Atlantic Islands National Park. Built between 1851 and 1853, this lighthouse was commissioned by the British consul in Galicia to ensure navigation on dark nights and facilitate entry into the port. It remains operational today, its light visible from 40 km away, fulfilling a vital maritime function. Its structure is made of granite, with a 13-meter-high tower, and it once housed a dwelling that was occupied until the 60s. Today, the lighthouse is automated and has undergone several renovations, the last in 1980. In late 2018, a restoration project began to improve both its infrastructure and its surrounding tourist attractions.
