Natural heritage of Humanity

Objective

The title of Natural World Heritage is awarded by UNESCO to specific sites on the planet that have been proposed and confirmed for inclusion in the list managed by the World Heritage Programme, which is administered by the World Heritage Committee.

The program's objective is to catalog, preserve, and promote sites of outstanding natural importance to humanity's common heritage. Therefore, if certain defined criteria are met, these sites may be eligible for conservation funding from the World Heritage Fund.

Each World Heritage Site belongs to the country in which it is located, but is considered to be in the interest of the international community and must be preserved for future generations.

Criteria to follow

To be included on the list as a Natural World Heritage Site, one of the following criteria must be met:

1. To be an outstanding or representative example of the different periods of Earth's life, including the record of evolution, of significant ongoing geological processes, of the development of landforms, or of significant geomorphic or physiographic features
2. To be eminently representative examples of ongoing ecological and biological processes in the evolution and development of ecosystems and communities of terrestrial, aquatic, coastal and marine plants and animals
3. To contain extraordinary natural phenomena or areas of exceptional natural beauty and aesthetic importance
4. To contain important and representative natural habitats for the conservation of biological diversity, including those that harbor threatened species that possess outstanding universal value from the point of view of science or conservation.

We can say that the Cíes Islands meet not one, but all of the aforementioned criteria. It is for this reason, and to ensure the ongoing conservation of the area, that the Cíes Islands should be declared a Natural World Heritage Site.
