The Cíes Islands World Natural Heritage of Humanity

The World Natural Heritage of Humanity title is granted by Unesco to specific sites of the planet that have been proposed and confirmed to be included in the list managed by the World Heritage Program, which is administered by the Patrimony of Humanity Committee.

The aim of the program is none other than to catalog, preserve and publicize sites of exceptional natural importance for the common heritage of mankind. That is why if certain criteria are met, the mentioned sites can obtain funding for their conservation from the the conservation of the World Heritage Fund.

Each Natural Heritage Site of Humanity belongs to the country in which it is located, but is considered in the interest of the international community and must be preserved for future generations.

Criteria To belong as a World Natural Heritage Site

To be an outstanding or representative example of the different life periods on Earth, including the historic recording of evolution, of significant geological processes in progress, Of the development of terrestrial forms, or of significant geomorphic or physiographic features.

Contain important and representative natural habitats for the conservation of biological diversity, including those harboring threatened species of exceptional universal value from the point of view of science or conservation

To be eminently representative examples of ongoing ecological and biological processes in the evolution and development of terrestrial, aquatic, coastal and marine ecosystems and communities of plants and animals

To have phenomenal Extraordinary natural features and areas of outstanding natural beauty and aesthetic importance

We can say that the Cíes Islands would fulfill not only one but all the above mentioned criteria. It is for this reason and to ensure the constant conservation of the area that the Cíes must be named World Natural Heritage of Humanity.
